The ÖSD (Austrian German Language Diploma) is an internationally recognised examination and certification system for German as a foreign and second language. An ÖSD certificate serves as official proof of your German language skills – for example, for work, university, education and training, as well as residence and integration purposes.

What do I need an ÖSD certificate for?

An ÖSD certificate may be required for various professional, academic or official purposes. The language level you need depends on what you intend to use your certificate for.

ÖSD Zertifikat A1

The A1 certificate provides proof of basic German language skills. Proof of German at A1 level may be required for certain residence or immigration procedures as well as for family reunification.

ÖSD Zertifikat A2

With an A2 certificate, you demonstrate that you can communicate in German in simple everyday and professional situations. German language skills at A2 level are also relevant in connection with the Austrian Integration Agreement and may additionally be useful for professional or personal purposes.

ÖSD Zertifikat B1

A B1 certificate confirms that you can use German independently. German language skills at B1 level play an important role in certain residence and naturalisation procedures in Austria and may also be relevant for professional purposes or vocational training.

ÖSD Zertifikat B2

The B2 certificate demonstrates advanced German language skills and may be particularly relevant for work, vocational training and university studies. Depending on the university, educational institution or employer, B2 may be required as proof of sufficient German language skills. A B2 language certificate may also be relevant when applying for Austrian citizenship on the basis of special integration achievements.

ÖSD Zertifikat C1

With a C1 certificate, you demonstrate highly advanced German language skills. This level is particularly relevant in academic and professional contexts and may, for example, be required for university studies taught in German or for jobs with high language proficiency requirements.

ÖSD Zertifikat A1

What German skills do I need for the ÖSD Zertifikat A1?

For the ÖSD Zertifikat A1, you should be able to communicate in German in very simple everyday situations. You can introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, and understand short pieces of information – for example, about family, housing, shopping or work.

How is the ÖSD Zertifikat A1 structured?

The exam consists of a written exam covering Reading, Listening and Writing, as well as an oral exam covering Speaking.

Exam structure:

Reading: 3 tasks – 25 minutes
Listening: tasks – approx. 10 minutes
Writing: completing a form and writing a simple text – 20 minutes
Speaking: a short introduction, picture description and role-play – approx. 10 minutes

ÖSD Zertifikat A2

What German skills do I need for the ÖSD Zertifikat A2?

At A2 level, you can already communicate in simple and routine situations in everyday and professional life. You can exchange information about familiar topics and talk about subjects such as family, work, leisure activities or your surroundings.

How is the ÖSD Zertifikat A2 structured?

The ÖSD Zertifikat A2 consists of two parts: a written exam covering Reading, Listening and Writing and an oral exam covering Speaking.

Exam structure:

Reading: 2 tasks – 30 minutes
Listening: 3 tasks – approx. 15 minutes
Writing: a personal email – 30 minutes
Speaking: introducing yourself and planning an activity together – approx. 10 minutes

ÖSD Zertifikat B1

What German skills do I need for the ÖSD Zertifikat B1?

At B1 level, you can already use German independently in many situations in everyday and professional life. You can communicate about familiar topics and personal interests and speak coherently about experiences, plans and opinions.

How is the ÖSD Zertifikat B1 structured?

The ÖSD Zertifikat B1 consists of four independent modules: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.

What makes the B1 exam different is that the four modules can be taken individually and independently of one another. You receive a module certificate for each module you successfully complete. Once you have passed all four modules, you will also receive the complete certificate.

Exam structure:

Reading: 5 tasks – 65 minutes
Listening: 4 tasks – approx. 40 minutes
Writing: 3 tasks – 60 minutes
Speaking: 3 tasks – approx. 15 minutes

This gives you the flexibility to take all four modules together or individual modules separately.

ÖSD Zertifikat B2

What German skills do I need for the ÖSD Zertifikat B2?

At B2 level, you can express yourself clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics and communicate relatively spontaneously and fluently. You can also understand more complex content and communicate confidently about social, everyday and professional topics.

The ÖSD Zertifikat B2 consists of a written exam covering Reading, Listening and Writing, as well as an oral exam covering Speaking.
